Heathkit EF-2 Oscilloscope Applications

The Heathkit EF-2 Oscilloscope Applications is a training kit for learning how to use an oscilloscope. I got this from an estate and it was missing the manuals, which are the heart of the program. I have been looking for the manuals, but recently I found a fellow who was looking for the hardware, so either way, it’ll be a happy ending.

Heathkit EF-2 front view

A simple front panel with 2 unassigned pots and an On-Off switch.

Heathkit EF-2 top

A nice open-frame test-bed for experimentation.

Heathkit EF-2 rear

Rear view showing the output to the scope. The silk-screening looks crooked!

Heathkit EF-2 back of front panel

Back of front panel showing wiring for pots. Slide switch controls the battery supply under the chassis. I forgot to take a pic of the battery holder. It had a couple of AA batteries rotting away when I got it, so it’s a bit gnarly.

Heathkit EF-2 side view

The vertical posts are for attaching the specially-prepared components and jumper wires during the experiments. There is an RF coil sticking up.

This is the original box the kit came in.

Heathkit EF-2 original papers

Looks like Hal ordered this on February 6, 1967 and paid a whopping $34.60 for this kit. The weevils had a few good meals out of the paperwork too.

Heathkit EF-2 loose parts

These are the loose parts that came with the kit. You can see an earphone all balled up at the top. There are resistors, capacitors, transistors, and jumper wires prepared with special clips.

Heathkit EF-2 special clips

These are the special clips that make experimental assemblies possible. One hook is soldered to the component lead, and the other is used to squeeze the clip and make the loop large enough to slide over the posts. A small chunk of heat-shrink tubing is placed on each hook.

Heathkit EF-2 prepared resistors

A wad of resistors prepared with clips and heat-shrink tubing.

Heathkit EF-2 prepared capacitors

Some capacitors prepared for experimentation.

Heathkit EF-2 solder pak

Don’t forget the solder!

Heathkit EF-2 extra parts

I guess Hal didn’t get around to putting clips on the rest of these parts. There’s a third transistor off to the left.
